What is Beforecare™?
Stallion Season Exchange has introduced Beforecare™ to ensure lifelong care for every Thoroughbred, starting when a foal stands and nurses.
Beginning in 2030, every Thoroughbred foal born in the U.S. will be covered by an individual retirement account — a Beforecare™ IRA. These resources will support Thoroughbred welfare for those who either do not earn enough to cover the costs of their ongoing care or whose owners lack the resources to support them indefinitely.
With an estimated annual foal crop of 18,000, this initiative will require significant yearly funding, which will be sourced from outside the industry.
Achieving this goal requires a comprehensive strategy that combines digital and traditional marketing, leverages technology, and engages the public to generate consistent annual crowdfunding revenue.
By transitioning from B2B funding to a B2C crowdfunding model, support for Thoroughbred Aftercare will extend to fans, enthusiasts, and the general public will be inspired to support the care and future of the horses they love, fostering a more inclusive, transparent, and sustainable ecosystem that benefits the entire sport.
Immediate Action for Today’s Needs
While the Beforecare™ IRA program is in development, the demand for Aftercare remains urgent.
Organizations like Old Friends Equine provide dignified retirement and second careers for former racehorses, but they require additional funding to meet the increasing demand.
To address these critical needs, Beforecare™ will support existing Aftercare programs for the next five years through a new revenue-generating program.
Beforecare™ is a transformative advancement that addresses today’s needs while securing long-term, scalable solutions that will ensure Thoroughbreds receive the care they deserve and alleviate industry funding burdens by 2030.
